External Drives Sleep problems

I need to upgrade my TM drive.

I'm debating between another internal drive, external usb connected to cMP, or external usb connected to another machine running server and using server app as TM.

What are the issues with volumes dismounting when a machine goes to sleep? Has this been fixed?
Is it a OS, host hardware, or drive hardware problem?

OS I think. I didn't have the problem with earlier versions, although by now I've lost track of when it happened exactly. There was a lot of talk about it in the USB 3.0 thread at that time.
