External DVD Burner

Hi,

I've heard numerous times that Apple only supports superdrive, and you cant use external DVD burner with iDVD.

First of all, does it mean it they dont provide technical support or you physically cannot use an external drive? If its the latter... why would they do this? I cannot rationalize it.

If you cannot use an external drive, is there another way to take a movie from iMovie or Final Cut and burn it on an external drive via third party software or other means?

I'm not sure about burning within OS X but there is a way to make iDVD produce a disk image of you DVD then use that to burn the DVD.
