External DVD Drive: Pausing makes it crash.

I use an External DVD drive, but whenever I pause a film for more than 10 seconds, resuming will cause it to crash. I suppose this happens when the drive stops spinning. I get an "Unable to skip damaged sections" warning when resuming, but the DVD itself is fine. The drive works perfectly well if I don't pause it.

Short or ripping the DVD and watching it via Quicktime, is it possible to force the DVD drive NOT to shut down on pause?
