So, with my new MacBook Pro, now I don't have a DVD drive. I'm looking to get an external DVD drive to be used occasionally. Most of them are USB 2.0. Is that fast enough? Will the MBP able to power the DVD drive?

USB 2.0 is plenty fast enough. DVD drives aren't all that fast.

MBP can power the dvd drive. DVDs read at maybe 5 MB/s, and USB 2.0 interface is about 28 MB/s, so it is more than enough. Don't pay extra for the apple one. Just get a $30 one that says it is compatible with OSX.

You may want to consider an external Blu-ray as they are not that much more. With some various third party solutions, you can play disks.
