My mid 2007 MacBook's Super Drive is on the fritz. I've tried the lens cloth on a gift card trick, and it now plays DVDs again, but it won't recognize my OSX install discs (I'm having some problems and want to reinstall the OS to see if that helps).

I'm going to try removing the drive and cleaning it, but if that doesn't work, I'm considering an external drive.

I just read that Apple's external Super Drive is not compatible with my machine. Are there other external DVDR drives that are?

A LaCie drive is a good bet. I have one from a few years ago that works well with my old MacBook. Not sure of the exact model unfortunately.
