External DVDROM boot on early imac?

I just need to know if there is any way possible to use an external DVD drive to boot and install an OS on a slot loading "Bondi Blue" imac?
 
no flippin way my friend say if it was a slot loading firewire with a firewire drive yes but on usb 1.1 no i tried on my non firewire slotloading on usb but if its firewire yes which os are u installing and are they retail dvds?

EDIT: and if u have another mac (PPC), have you ever takin target mode into consideration? ask if u need verification.
