Hi all,

My iMac is placed in such away that if I need to gain access to the DVD drive, I need to swivel it around on the desk to get at it.

So, the plan is to get an external unit and plug it into a USB port.

What I am finding though is that the majority of the drives say their supported OS is Windows based with no mention of Mac or Linux.

Can I used one of these drives on a Mac?

practically any ol' external dvd drive will work, plug and play.

In my experience, I haven't come across an external optical drive that didn't "just work" on a Mac.
Yes, the Hardware is probably gonna work just fine, but A better way of asking is to say, "Does the bundled software support Mac OSX"? Do you wanna burn stuff or just read?

Did the problem of the Apple DVD Player software refusing to work with external DVD drives ever get fixed?

Forgot about that, good point!

Last I checked no, you can hack the dvd player software or just use Video Lan.

I know for a FACT that using a MacBook Air External drive wasn't meant to work with other OSX products.
