I upgraded my internal hard drive and put the original drive in a Macally PHRS250CC 2.5 firewire external enclosure. The drive will not power up from the firewire bus alone.

If I use the firewire connection for data and the USB/AC power cord for power, it will work.

If I use just the USB data cable, it will power up.

If I plug in just the firewire cable to my WinXP PC, it will power up.

Am I missing something on my MBP as far as a setting goes, to power it via the firewire bus alone?

The cable that I'm using has one 9-pin FW800 connection and one 4 pin FW400 connection, and then a 4 pin to 6 pin FW400 adapter. It works fine with my 3.5 external firewire drive (that has an independent power supply). Could that be what's keeping me from powering the drive through the firewire cable alone?

Any and all help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!
