I am using LaCie Brick Mobile.

It is connected to my Mac using 6 pin firewire cable.

But the external HD refuses to spin-down.

This hard drive is very quiet.

But if I place my hand on top of the drive, I can feel a slight vibration caused by the spinning HD.

There is no on/off button in this external HD.

I would like to let it spin down after a period of inactivity to prolong its life.

Can anyone suggest a way to do that?

In the Energy Saver preference pane, is the "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" checkbox ticked?

actually, starts and stops are what wear a hard drive down, not the usage. not that you should leave it running 24/7, but intentionally stopping and starting it will shorten it's life, not prolong it.

Very true.

I have the same issue with m my external FW drive. Oddly, when I eject it from my tower (via firewire), it keeps spinning, but when I eject it from my laptop (via USB2.0), it DOES spin down. Never quite figured that one out.
