Hello, I just bought a new Macbook Pro 15" 2.3 Ghz with the Thunderbolt port. What would be the appropriate external hard drive to get in order to maximize speed given my configuration?

What will the HDD be used for? Maybe any USB 3 HDD will suffice your needs, as Thunderbolt devices are still quite expensive.

Get a USB 3.0 like this at B&H Photo, it's currently on sale.

USB 3.0 unless you plan on a RAID solution, Thunderbolt is kinda pricey still.
