External Hard drive causing Airport probems

I have a 1TB USB HDD plugged into a Airport extreme base station which has video files on for iTunes and apple tv. When I try to attach artwork to some of the files the hard drive restarts itself which cause the airport to disconnect and go a amber colour for about a minute while the hard drive boots back up. Has any one else had this problem or have a solution?
