Hi,

Apologies if this kind of problem has already been discussed, I've looked all over and couldn't find anything identical to my issue so felt necessary to post a new thread.

I have an external hard drive that just today has ceased working. By that I mean, it was temperamental in sometimes working and sometimes not, until today it gave out. I was able to recover some but not all files and there are a lot of photos/memories / work etc..

I'm not a huge technical whiz but here goes with what I know. I took it to a local PC repair shop and they took the drive out of its case and tested it on a PC, all data still remained so they said it may have been the connection and put it in a new shell/box.

Unfortunately I had no luck when trying to connect it back to my Macbook Pro (bought Oct 2012, no retina). On Disk Utility it's recognised but greyed out and I can't mount it.

It says 'could not read boot block (input/output error) File system check exit code is 8', and the disk needs to be repaired.

I tried the hard drive on a Windows laptop and received an 'I/O service error'.

I'm anxious about the next step as I don't want to format anything due to the probable loss of information I might not be able to recover.

Any advice will be gratefully received and considered...

**sorry, realise this is in Mac Pro forum. I did try on my iMac too so I guess it's an 'Apple' issue anyway..
