It seems that when copying large amounts of data between hard drives for backup purposes that the progress bar halts, seemingly due to some folder hierarchy issues. I cannot cease the stalling and have to unplug the drive "unsafely". After doing this numerous times, my MBP now freezes altogether when unplugging. Is time machine the only way to go? Why can't I seem to just drag large amounts of data (even smaller chunks) between drives without all this drama?

Any suggestions to get me through these transfers without my MBP being forever prone to stubborn freezes?
