External Hard Drive files not viewable

I have a MacBook Pro and WD External Hard Drive I use to store mostly pictures. Purchased a new MacBook Air. Ran a Time Machine backup to the external hard drive from the MacBook Pro before transferring all my files to the new MacBook Air. Now the only files viewable on the external hard drive are the Time Machine backups. How can I access the files that were on the external HD prior to the Time Machine backup?
