Sorry if this has been asked a thousand times but I can't seem to find what I want through searching.

I have an iMac and a Macbook Pro and I'm looking for an external hard drive that I can use to back up both macs. I was going to get a Time Capsule but I can't justify the cost compared to others. Do I need a NAS drive or will any external hard drive be able to do both? I'd prefer firewire rather than USB too (unless anyone tells me it wont make much difference!)#

Thanks

Any hard drive will be OK for that. Time Machine just creates 2 folders, one for your iMac and one for your MBP

Depending on your drive's connection options, you may end up having to swap a cable back and forth if its not an NAS device.

I was looking at the WD My Book Studio which has firewire and USB ports. Could I have both my macs hooked up to this at the same time?
