External Hard Drive Freezes My Mac

Eventually but not immediately whenever my Western Digital 1TB drive is plugged into my mac mini, any program accessing the external hard drive will freeze with related spinning beach ball. If I open the external drive it will not show that there are any files on it. If I manually unplug the drive, everything that was frozen magically unfreezes. Thoughts?

If you use the external hard drive on another Mac, does the issue still persist?

Maybe I'm a little late but I have the same problem. I tried the HD on an other Mac and it did the same thing. Any advise.
