I'm enjoying my first mac - a 15" macbook pro. After five months I can get around pretty well. Now I want to access the files on my 3-year-old Maxtor One Touch II 300 GB external hard drive which was previously used with my pc. Mostly jpegs. and msoffice documents. I have iWork but do not have msoffice on my macbook.

Should I just plug in - firewire 400 to firewire 800 (XHD to macpro) or should I, as some have suggested, run each unit into a router with ethernet cables to access and transfer files from the XHD to the macbook?

Once I've exracted the files I want I may erase and reformat the old HD and use it exclusively with the mac or I may buy a new HD. I'm open to suggestions as to which approach to take there too.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.
