I am investigating the option of an external hard drive for my pbk 15" 1.5Ghz. I mainly use my pbk for IRAF reductions of astronomy data. Many of the processes involved in the reductions seem to be disk heavy i.e. I think it's the speed of the internal HD that is the limiting factor in my work. The upshot of all of this is that I would like to get a fast large external hard drive - am I best off using the FW400/FW800 ports or would a PCMCIA SCSI? card be even faster?

Cheers

FW800 definitely, but you might wanna look into upgrading your stock hard drive with a 7,200 RPM drive. Everything would run faster that way, plus they can run larger than standard HD's. I know Hitachi makes a pretty nice one, and you could always stick your old drive in an external enclosure for extra storage space.
