external hard drive problem

I had external harddrive I was using on my mbp and windows 7 machine. Recently the harddrive wouldn't mount to my mbp but would read on windows. I tried to do a disk repair, now on both machines it says the disk needs to be format it. Is their any way to get my files off the drive before I format the drive? Any data recovery software? and should i do it on my mac pr windows machine?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
