I have had my external hard drive connected to my laptop for over a year... suddenly it has stopped mounting to the desktop. The drive shows up in disk utility but I cannot access it. When I connect the drive to my laptop it asks me if I want to initialize it. Did something get corrupted where I cannot access the drive? I have tried resetting the SMC but nothing?? Any thoughts??

Sounds like the filesystem may have been compromised to a point it is no longer recognized as anything. Do you have another computer you can connect it to?

I don't have another computer to connect to. Any suggestions what to do next??

Restart, unplug your drive, try a different connecting cable and a different port on your computer and try again. If your drive is unmountable (test on another computer), then either Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro should help rebuild the directory.
