External Hard Drive Problem

I have a external hard drive and I partitioned it for Time Machine and for backup of pics and such, but if I delete a file off the backup partition it won't free up space. The file will disappear from finder but the remaining space does not go up.
Does anyone know whats wrong?

Oh, I did not know that external drives use the trash when attached.

They have a hidden file on that drive that records stuff going into trash. That's why if you eject the drive, the trash icon on the Mac will show nothing in the trash, but as soon as you plug the external back in the trash will show something in it.
