external hard drive question???

I just bought a 500 gig wd hd for my MacBook. I'm currently uploading all my stuff from my old of so I can get rid of it. Now my main question is, is it possible to rum the information soley off the ehd? I'm transfering movies and music and I dont want any of it on my MacBook so it doesn't take up space. Will it work? Thanks
