External Hard Drive Restoration

I know this may sound like a silly question but I last night I accidentally erased my external hard drive using Disk Utility (instead of my memory stick which was also connect). I was just wondering if there is anyway to retrieve this data or has it been lost forever

Using a program like Data Rescue, you could potentially recover some of the deleted files, but you've hosed the directory structure, so file names and layout of the directories is pretty much gone.
