External hard drive with Catalina freezing 2012 iMac

I installed a USB 3.0 external solid state hard drive on my 27" 2012 iMac with a clean copy of Catalina. The previously internal hard drive has not been touched. I wanted to install a SSD w/o taking apart the iMac. Sometimes when it goes to its screen saver it freezes up.

What might be causing the freezing? Catalina itself or something else?
