Last night I noticed that the time machine icon on the menu bar had a stop sign or something and when i clicked back up now it says it can not back up. I verified the volume and recommends a repair but it says it can not repair. Says I should back up data, reformat disk and restore

Can anyone help?
 
I just had a similar thing happen with a Seagate Freeagent Go 640GB drive which worked perfectly under Windows. After several tries I finally sold the drive (I made it clear that it gave problems with my Mac) and got a different kind (Iomega eGo triple interface). I will never own another Seagate for any reason.
