I've had my macbook for about three years now (running OS X 10.5.8) and I purchased a WD external hard drive last year. I've backed up my files on it before, but it has just recently stopped connecting to my computer. When I plug it in, the light on the external hard drive flashes, and it clicks incrementally (about one click per second), and it doesn't show up on my computer. I've read things about putting the hard drive in the freezer to temporarily restore access, but it works perfectly fine with my fiancee's Macbook Pro (roughly two years old).

I'm really worried that something may be wrong with my computer, rather than the hard drive. Any thoughts?

Have you tried restarting the computer? If the problem persisted after that, I would check to see if the drive shows up in "Disk Utility" and "System Profiler"... do other devices work using the same port?

also, is it a firewire or usb drive?
