External hard drive won't shutdown

I have a studio edition mybook 500 gb that is installed on my ibook g4. After installation it refuses to allow me to shutdown my computer. I have tried to drag the icon to the trash like it said to do to close it but it won't allow me to. Any ideas on what the hang up is?

Something to try

Maybe try and unmount the device first then shut computer down
should be Ctrl + left mouse button, then unmount
