Yeah it'll work. It's usb 2 and you'd format it for your mac first. Take note of that...it has to be formatted for mac otherwise you can't transfer files that are over a certain size. I learned the very hard way! As for the drive, I have that and a LaCie...the lacie is **** compared to this one...I also learned that the hard way. :)

thanks for that,my housemate has a lacie and she hasnt had any complaints
is it possible for me to back up stuff from mac and a pc onto there?
is there anything else i should know when choosing an external hard drive?

Personally I hate LaCies. I got one 160GB which has FW400 and 800 and a 250GB with FW400, 800 and USB 2.0.

I would NOT RECOMMEND LaCie. It seems to be buggy, sometimes not appearing and sometimes rejecting copying to or from the drive. I've experienced this first hand and so have a couple of my friends with LaCies. It's funny that they sell them in the Apple Stores because that was what first made me buy them.

I've hear really good things about Western Digital ones like the one that you're looking at. The prince on the one that you found isn't bad. I found this on buy.com (which is a great place for finding good prices on external HD's).

It's US$ 102.95 = about 53 UK£

Oh, and Newegg.com has good deals sometimes too.

Oh, and one of my friends bought a LaCie drive and it died one week later. He had no warranty...

Then he bought another one after that...
that one died too.

I'm not kidding.

I've started my iBook up from a acomdata ondago(79$) for 2 months and the hd works beautifully(and looks pretty, too).

cheers ive decided to buy this one,if its crap i will blame you:mad: :D

i'll buy from here, last time i bought from US i got hit with import and customs tax

yay my hard drive arrived today, what do i need to do to format it for mac?
there is some autorun stuff and google stuff on there

Another question

I have a cobra external 60gb usbII drive, it takes over 3 hours to copy 8gb of files to it. I just got a new firewire case for the drive, put the drive into the case, but my emac wont recognize, it shows up in my system profiler and my disk tools, but disk tools tells me there is an "in/Out" problem. Any ideas on how to get this working?
Thanks, Alan

hello? im in disk utilities whaht do i do to format?
i dunno what partitions are

I have gone through about 5 or 6 lacie triple interface drives in the last 2 years if you include all the replacements I was sent that also died. Thankfully I am an obsesive backer-upper so I have lost very little data. I have now switched to a combination of Maxtor (which are a little buggy although fundamentally OK) and Western Digital drives (I work in TV and Music and have literally 20 external hard drives) The WD's seem to me to be the most stable by far, although I have only been using them for about 5 months...

Having said all that I have just got a 320Gb Little Big Disk from Lacie for my MBP so fingers crossed there.....

hello i dunno how to format the drive

In your Utilities folder There is an application called Disk Utility.

Run it, let it "gather disk information", then select the drive you want to format (make sure it is definitely the right one). On the right habd side you have 4 tabs, click on erase and then select the format you want. If you want to transfer between mac and PC you may want to use MS-DOS (aaaggh) as OSX can read both, but, you are limited to how long you file names can be and also can't use certain symbols in your file names too.

There is some software that will let a pc read hfs+ (mac OS Extended) drives, google it for more info....

Once you have selected your format, Name your new drive and hit erase....

ok so if i pick ms dos its will work on both?
and i can format it again to make it different next time?
and is it possible to format just one partition?
