External Hard Drive

Hi all,
have a 13" intel mac. Running 10.5.8. Consistently have backed up with same harddrive, albeit not for a while. Today I tried and the external was simply not recognized. Doesn't show up in system profile. External has own power source. Also, i've tried multiple plugs. One thing that is odd is when I unplug it, lectures me for incorrectly disconnecting a device... which would suggest it was recognizing it. Any suggestions? Thanks

Open Disk Utility and see if it's recognized there

yeah, it is in disk utility now, should i manually mount from terminal?

I have the same problem sometimes, almost always with USB peripherals. OS X simply refuses to recognize that there is a drive connected, but it will see that something is connected and scold you Microsoft-style for not Ejecting the device before unplugging it.
