When I copy large amounts of files (>700 MB) in between my external hard drives, my system lags horribly. I do a "top - u" in Terminal and see a process called "kernel_task" that is taking up my CPU. I have seen the CPU percentage go up to 105% and everything else is lagging. This doesn't happen when I am copying from the internal drive to the external drives.

This happens regardless of OS. I am using 10.4, but I also tried it in 10.3 and it still acts this way.

If anyone can explain what's going on, and what I can do about it, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance for the help.
