Sorry for the possible so simple answers to my questions.

Time Machine...

How well does it work and is everyone using it effectively? In other words, aren't there other backup applications that is comparable? In addition, is it something that is crucial? I can see the use of it for I back up things manually to my external drive but having it all automated seems pretty cool. yes, I could've done it with the other backup applications if I had the time to set it up.

This is my first mac.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BOwL8MuE_Y shows you how to use time machine.

It works very well for me, I have never lost a file since I started using it.

I have never really lost any files as well without using any of the backup solutions, however, keeping files backup'd and sync was a tedius effort. You had to remember whether you should back up now or what to backup. Everything was relatively manual.

I'm thinking of giving this a go by selectively ask it to backup files so I never have to worry about it.
