I need to pick up an external hard drive and see certain HDs listed as "Backup Slim for Mac" etc. but I thought any external hard drive could just be formatted and used. Is this just a sales gimmick?

I prefer Western Digital drives. I have had good luck with these.
Here is a link to a drive on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Black-Passpor...wo_browse-bin:7817230011,p_89:Western+Digital

The same drive, but listed as for Mac it $10.00 more. The only difference is it is reformatted for Mac.
Either drive will work, it only takes about 10-15 seconds to reformat the drive for Mac.
I would buy to cheaper one.

I bought one once. Came with Mac software already on it. I think already formatted too.

You can download the software, and reformat easy enough, if you don't choose that model.

Download what software? The drive can be formatted using disk utility in two steps?

I have a 2TB Western Digital My Passport which was formatted for Windows; I simply went into Disk Utility and formatted it to OS X Extended Journaled. I have also encrypted my MBP and Back Up drive, and it works perfectly.
