External Harddrive recommendations?

I recently bought a new iMac and my old 500 gig external hard-drive is really pretty useless now that my computer has 2TB of storage.

Just wondering if anyone has any brands or specific hard drives they'd recommend. There are lots of choices out there and I don't know if I should go with usb or firewire? Is there a big difference? How much storage should I be looking to get? Thanks for the help!
