I have an external firewire drive that is at my house that I update usually twice a year when I am home from traveling. I am the only one who uses this drive however when I tried to update the drive is locked and listed as "Read Only" and there is nowhere I can find that gives me the option to change this (other then reformatting). Anyone know how I can unlock this drive so that I can add to it? All of my other information is overseas so I am unable to reformat first then update it (or else I lose all my old information).

1. Right Click on your hdd
2. click Get Info
3. Scroll down and press the padlock
4. type your password
5. change to Read & Write

hope thats what you wanted...:)

What if the drive is external?

While your solution works with the HD on a MAC, how about external drives?

Under "sharing and permissions" I keep on getting the "you can only ready" message... for my Fantom Drive.

How can I fix it to give it "read and write" permission?

Thanks for the help in advance, Z

Problem fixed

I used the Disk Utility. Verified disk, then Repair disk and all of a sudden the Fantom is "writable".
