External Harddrive - sharing photos between PC and Mac

I know this has been asked & answered before, but I still get confused. Hubby & I have separated, and he kept the external hard drive to his PC computer with all the family photos on it. I now have a Mac and want to send him an external hard drive for which he can copy all our photos onto (years worth ... tons), and then just hand over new hard drive to me with the photos. I'll then want to start using that external hard drive from my Mac. Do-able? How should we format the new hard drive so he can copy things from his PC and I can still access from my Mac - We won't be sharing hereafter ...

Any better ideas?

If you use a regular NTFS formatted HDD (most are).. then he can write the pictures to the HDD. You can read them onto your computer (assuming you have enough space). Then you can reformat the HDD to run native on your Mac.
