Thunderbolts are too expensive, so im assuming I'll go the usb 3.0 route (firewire is slower yes?). Does the MBA have enough juice to run the usb powered harddrives?
Yes, USB 3.0 is faster than Firewire. Yes, the MBA can power USB-powered drives.

I just bought me one of those you linked. I went for 500gb, to use as backup disk. Nice small size, haven't been able to test the usb 3 speed yet. My mba is still on its way :).
 
There are a few other threads with this topic, and plenty of good answers if you look. Personally i use a Seagate go flex that is usb 3. A 1tb drive set me back about $90 from Amazon.
