I have a external hard drive hooked up to my rmbp with movies pics and so on.. My question is can I have a backup with time machine as well keep pics and so on on the same HD?

Yes, you can use your drive for both TM and other storage, as long as it's formatted as HFS+. You don't need to partition the drive, but it helps, as TM will try to fill the whole drive, not leaving room for other files.

You can, but then what's backing up your Movies and Pics? Personally I would buy another HD and back them both up. Redundancy is king
