External HD error 36 (IO error I think)

Hey im having some troubles with my external HD.
It will let me copy anything on to it, but when trying to copy some thing from it to my computer I get an error some data could not be read or written error 36. It only happens every now and then and at different files at random.
Tried it on a windows computer and it gives a cyclic redundancy check error. Have also tried to reformat the HD but still get the same problem.

Anyone have any ideas?
