I want to back it up so I've found two I like - would any of you recommend them?

And also, I've had my MBP for a month now, but it can be really slow at times, I'm a little disappointed about this. It also gets VERY hot at times, and I get this weird message pop up about 5 times a day but it's too quick for me read.
Buy a cheap usb enclosure, they can be had for roughly 5-10 bucks. Then buy a bare drive and stick it in. You'll likely save money that way.

Any external drive will work just fine, really.

As far as temperatures go, MBP's can very easily get hot to the touch, due to the aluminum enclosure conducting heat. Install the iStat pro widget to monitor temperatures, but I strongly doubt your temperatures are at a dangerous level.

Oh, do you have any links to these USB enclosure things?

The hottest it has got I had to remove it from my lap and switch if off and it hurt to hold.
