I recently repartitioned and reformatted my external HD. now, he simply doesn't work anymore. time machine always hangs after exactly 5,5 Gb. tried formatting it at least 5 times. used disk EHBO . still, I can't even copy/ paste something to it without the process hanging, and the Finder with it.I can't get it to format in Windows either. I'm running 10.6.1 SL . Is my HD dead?

Sounds pretty likely. Finder hanging is a symptom of the drive stalling without telling the computer that it's not working; the Finder is sitting waiting for it to do something forever.
When you format it with Disk Utility have you tried turning on "Zero Out Data" in the security options button? If it hangs during the format with this checked then you can be pretty darned sure that the drive is seizing up when it hits that part of the disk.
Any chance this is still under AppleCare?
If the HD was upgraded, that might have a warranty.
