First time I've used an external HD. I'm not super familiar with permissions, but I want to be able to set the permissions like in /User where each user can RW, but others can not.

As I switch users, each user appears to be the owners of the files. Switching to root I see that _unknown is the actual owner of the files. The problem is I can't change the ownership to any particular user. _unknown is still the owner. Are there special rules that apply to external HDs?

I need to prevent the other users on this machine from changing my files. Thanks

I fixed the issue.

Long story short, select 'Get Info' on the external volume itself and uncheck 'Ignore ownership on this volume' and boom! Ownership and permissions can now be set.
