External HD reduced capacity problem.

Hi and thanks for any replies.

I have an oldish SmartDisk FW external HD that was no longer large enough for back-ups. So I opened it up and replaced the 80GB drive with a250GB Maxtor.

Everything works fine except the drive comes up as 128GB. This was only an INTERNAL drive problem to my knowledge and I cannot understand why this is. Possibly a chipset cause?

I am using 10.2.4 on a 733 Quicksilver G4.

its possible the extrenal case you have will not read anything larger then 128gigs.. how old is it. you could check the web site of the manufacters web site

About three years old, have checked the site and there were 60, 80 and 120GB models. I don't think they expect people to swap out the originals.

yea that seems to be the problem, you can get a new external case for like $40 bucks or less.. it would be worth it to check into it
