Just a quick question, I hope that this isn't too juvenile of a question. I have a MacBook, and I'd like to use Time Machine, I thought about doing it wirelessly, but where I'm going to live and how much money I want to spend right now, makes me think that I'd rather use an external HD.

Is it possible for me to format the HD for Time Machine, and keep it on my desk, and then when I plug into my laptop it will backup, then I can go, out and use my laptop, but when I come back to my desk I can plug it back in again and Time Machine will back up and work normally, will this work?

Yes, it will work like that. Also note that you can manually start a backup (e.g., when you plug TM disk back in, withing waiting for the scheduled backup time to arrive).
