External HD Won't Recognize

I've tried hooking up my External HD directly to my Mac Mini and my Macbook Pro, something I've done many times in the past, but it won't get picked up by either computer. It only registers when I plug it into my Airport Extreme as it shows up in my Shared Drives in the finder. I want to go back to just hardwiring it to my Mac Mini but it won't take... Anyone have any ideas/suggestions? I've already tried rebooting, unplugging, etc... Just not working.
