I'm currently on a PC and want to move my files to my MBP which is coming next week. I have a HP external hard drive which came with my computer and I have all my stuff on there. I heard that to use it on a Mac I have to reformat it which means I'll lose all the files.

Is there a way I can use it to move my stuff or would I be better off burning everything to loads of DVDs?

Also my current external hard drive is 160gb, the same as my MBP. I want to buy the Western Digital Mybook 500gb one. Is the situation the same if I add all my PC files on it and then transfer them? I'll be getting one anyway so I'm hoping its a good one.

Ok I just checked and its NTFS. All I want to do is move the stuff from PC to Mac, will this be alright or is that considered writing as well?
