External HDD and time machine issue

So, i have a 500gb external,and would like to use it as time machine, but it says i have to reformat it, but can i partition it and use the other half for the back up? and can i back up JUST itunes onto my external?

Well i have a 640 WD drive. I partitioned about half for TM and i keep unused pics, and movies on the other half.

disc utility im pretty sure, just hit the partition and pick the size if i remember right

Yah, i started out fresh, im not sure what to do when you already have stuff on it. too bad you cant just transfer out, partition, then move back. Im not sure there is a way to partition a drive with stuff on it. Try some googling theres gotta be something on there.
