External HDD busy for a long time when connect from pc last to mac

I wonder what it is that my PC (W7 64) does to my HDD, because if I connect it to my PC, it works fine. But then if I go later and connect it to my macbook, it is busy with activity light steady for a long time. What is OSX doing over again that my PC is undoing to this drive? If I don't connect it to my PC, and just use it with my macbook, it is fine, it is immediately free to use after plugging in with no period of extended activity. Any info would be really appreciated!
