I have a 128GB Macbook Air, and I just bought a shiny new camera

Problem is, I want my shiny new camera to shoot pictures at highest possible quality, and picture files are coming out at about 30mb each! My 128gb Macbook Air will surely run out of space quickly because of this camera...
I like using iPhoto to organize my photos (and also because it can easily process raw photos from my camera).
So tl;dr, I'm wondering if my Macbook can manage an iPhoto library on a USB external hard drive.
And I'm also wondering if I could plug that external hard drive with the iPhoto library into other Macs so family members can also check out pictures.
