Apologies if this belongs in a different area of the forum

I have a MBP early 2011 for 2.5 years now, love it, great machine. It still has USB 2.0 ports. When I connect a USB 3.0 external drive to my MBP, whenever I watch video, after a length of time the video freezes though the audio still plays, and then after a few seconds the video unfreezes and quickly catches up to the audio. It will do it, once every 10 minutes or so, give or take.

It's an annoyance, really, but I wanted to know if I missed something that I can do to fix the problem? Not use USB 3.0 drives on a USB 2.0 computer?? That wouldn't work because eventually I'll have a mac with USB 3.0 ports.

Thanks!
