Hey there, i have recently purchased an external hard drive and i am wanting to partition it into two. However when i open disk utility and move to the partitioning menu i am unable to select the drop down menu giving me the option to select the number of partitions. Help me!!

If the drive is brand new, I think the easiest course of action is:
1. Launch Disk Utility
2. Re-initialize the external drive to HFS+
3. Partition the drive using DU's "partition" tab.
This WILL make unreadable anything that is already on the drive.
But you'll be starting out "clean and fresh".
